Scrapbook Page Ideas – How To Create An Out of Bounds Layout

Creating an Out of Bounds layout can really make your scrapbook page ideas POP! and be more exciting to the eye.

The basic idea of an Out of Bounds or OOB (if you follow the scrapbooking forums) layout is by making part of a photograph stand outside a frame.

Here's my simple technique for creating you own Out of Bounds scrapbook page layouts.

  • First of all choose a photograph that has a main focal point like a head and shoulder portrait.
  • Open up your scrapbooking software program. I use Photoshop but most of the software packages out there can achieve the same results by adapting these steps to suit.
  • To begin you'll need a background paper, a frame and at least one photograph.
  • Place the frame above the background as a separate layer. Then underneath the frame add your photo also as a separate layer.
  • To clarify you should now have a background paper, a photograph and a frame.
  • You'll need to resize the frame or the photo so that the frame is smaller than the photograph.
  • Position the frame so that part of the photo layer is outside the edge of the frame. This is going to help achieve your "out of bounds" scrapbook page layout .
  • Create a layer mask on the frame layer and start removing the edge of the frame where you want the edge of the photo to pop out.
  • You'll also need to add a layer mask to the photo layer so that you can remove the surrounding area.

And that's it, once you have masked out the layers your photo should look like it's popping out of the frame.

I find a successful Out of Bounds layout will keep some of the original background inside the frame and adding a drop shadow to the photo layer really helps create a 3D effect.
